Australian Overshoot Day

April 5th is the day Australia overshoots its carbon budget in 2024. That means in just a quarter of a year, our entire carbon budget has been used.

From Bread and Circuses on Mastodon:

Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year. This deficit arises from liquidating stocks of ecological resources and accumulating waste, primarily carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

On a global level, Earth Overshoot Day in 2024 is expected to be around August 1.

A country’s overshoot day is the date on which Earth Overshoot Day would fall if all of humanity consumed like the people in that country. The chart above shows specific dates of overshoot for several dozen major countries.
